Allow Me To Introduce Myself...

Hello Cyberspace,

My name is Liz and I have been positioned to share my views and perceptions with you all. This blog was originally initiated for my Journalism class entitled, "Race, Gender, & Media: A Methods Approach" [hence the title], but in addition to expressing my thoughts about the class, I would also like to take a journey. From the past to the present. To see, where we as humankind, have progressed. If even, at all.

I would like to take a brief moment to explain the actual URL of the blog. [bamboozledsince1865.blogspot.com] During the first class, our teacher talked about what exactly we will be covering in the class and she mentioned the Spike Lee film, Bamboozled. Now, when this movie was released, I was 15 years old. Not really concerned with anything besides sports, I'm pretty sure I began to watch the film, but never really got into it. Mainly because I'm sure that anything of this stature was over my head at the time. But just like The Color Purple, I remember viewing it and not really taking anything from it. Revisiting the film over the years, has definitely brought things into retrospective. Which is where the "bamboozled" part of the address comes into play.

Being that I live in Texas and that I am an African-American female, I am very aware of the celebration upon African-Americans that we have labeled Juneteenth. If you are unaware with Juneteenth, it is basically a reality to this day for Blacks in the South. Historically speaking, in 1865, two years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves, it was then announced to the southern slaves in Galveston, Texas, that they were now free. (2 years. After the fact. Thank you telegrams.) Which makes me think to myself, "Why is the hell did it take so long for them to deliever such important news?!" But hey now, Blacks are free...so let's celebrate.

Welcome to the site. Let the growing begin.
